Welcome
Hello! My name is Mrs. Dennis and I am your child's Learning Support teacher teacher. Mathematical literacy, you might be thinking what class is that? Never fear, Mathematics and literacy remain the same subjects you know and love but they have more in common than one might think. This site was designed to connect the dots between these concepts give you a look at how they will appear in our classroom.
More specifically this site will address number theory and it's relationship with literacy. We will be addressing the Standards found within the Common Core as we learn comparing two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size, recognizing that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole and recording the results of comparisons as well as justifying the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction models. We will also address the standards including determining the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. The vocabulary, children's literature, strategies, parent/child activities, games, websites and apps are meant as resources to encourage the development of those skills.
